Research Positions


Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I am not currently able to consider applications for new research positions. Please check back in the 2021-2022 academic year if you are interested in working with me.

Law Students

  • Independent Study Opportunities: I am currently seeking 1-2 students interested in participating (for credit) as research assistants in a multi-semester research project on cybersecurity policymaking processes. Please contact me directly by email (dbthaw (at) pitt (dot) edu) if you are interested.
  • Upper Level Writing Requirement(s): Limited availability for J.D. students seeking to work fulfill their upper-level writing requirment(s) through independent writing. Per School of Law add/drop policy, students must inquire prior to the end of the first week of classes.
  • General Independent Study: Except in exceptional cases, I do not currently have availability to take on additional students for general independent study.

Information/Computer Science Students

  • CyREN Laboratory: I currently have limited openings (for credit) both for undergraduate and graduate students to work as part of a cybersecurity research team in the CyREN Laboratory. Email CyREN Recruitment for more information (please include your resume).
  • Ph.D. Students:: I am currently considering students who have interests in cybersecurity and related areas of information law and policy. However, please note that I currently do not have funding available for Ph.D. students. Please only contact me after you have applied through the normal application process for the School of Information Sciences and have satisfied all the application requirements.
